In 1858 courbet rimase a francoforte, dove fu messo a disposizione uno studio in cui i giovani pittori potevano osservarlo al lavoro . tre foto importanti risalgono al suo soggiorno a francoforte : il cacciatore tedesco , Il Hunters' pasto e la donna di francoforte . A courbet piaceva andare a caccia durante il soggiorno nel Franche-Comté o la germania , ma dipingere scene sportive di questo tipo in grande formato era una questione molto diversa e rappresentava una sfida considerevole , uno che ha risolto optando per un approccio ornamentale .
